Our First Grain Dryer

After one difficult season in 1956 of trying to dry corn without supplemental heat, Dad bought this Behlen batch dryer to dry the corn before filling these bins. The dryer burned propane gas to heat the corn and was powered by this IH Farmall 400 tractor. Back in the 1950's, nearly all farm tractors used gasoline, while now almost all of the tractors use diesel fuel.

We started using International Harvester 1480 combines with eight row cornheads in 1978. This IH truck originally had a big IH gasoline V-8 but the exhaust was so hot it set the cornstalks on fire so often that we replaced it with a 466DT diesel...problem solved!
